Crafting a Budget-Friendly Itinerary: My Flights to Japan and Taiwan in Spring 2024

December 11, 2023

As a financial advisor, I firmly believe that mindful financial choices extend to every aspect of our lives, including travel. In this blog post, I'll share my personal journey of booking flights to Japan and Taiwan for specific dates in March and April 2024, showcasing the strategic decisions that resulted in substantial savings.

Setting the Stage: Tokyo Bound on March 28th, 2024

My adventure kicks off with a targeted plan as I booked my one-way flight to Tokyo, Japan, from Los Angeles for a budget-friendly $630, scheduled for March 28th, 2024 by using ZipAir, the low-cost airline under the well-known Japan Airlines. One-way flights from larger airlines such as United, ANA, and Delta, prices are averaging around $1,100. The reason why prices are so high is because of peak cherry blossom season throughout Japan. By locking in this specific date, I aimed to maximize the potential for cost savings while ensuring a well-timed arrival in the vibrant city of Tokyo.

Tip: When planning international travel, consider setting specific travel dates to increase the likelihood of finding budget-friendly options.

Business Class Bliss: Osaka to Taipei on April 10th, 2024

After exploring Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka, I wanted to add a touch of luxury to my journey, so I strategically used approximately 33,000 Capital One Rewards Miles to book a business class one-way flight from Osaka to Taipei, Taiwan, scheduled for April 10th, 2024. This decision not only enhances the overall travel experience but also aligns with a carefully planned itinerary. I do want to note that the points were transferred to EVA Air Infinity MileageLand program, unlocking premium travel without a hefty price tag. I only had to pay roughly $106 for fuel surcharges and taxes that this airline passes to its customers.

Tip: Explore the potential of credit card points and loyalty programs to elevate your travel experience without exceeding your budget.

Homeward Bound: Taipei to Los Angeles on April 14th, 2024

The final leg of my journey combines the homeward bound experience with points power. I secured a one-way flight from Taipei to Los Angeles, scheduled for April 14th, 2024, and further maximized savings by using 50,000 American Express Membership Rewards points. Transferring these points to Delta's SkyMiles program allowed me to book a China Airlines flight worth $1031, demonstrating the significant value of leveraging credit card rewards for long-haul flights. As for taxes, I only paid $33.

Tip: When booking return flights, consider factors such as travel dates, convenience, and potential savings through points redemption. Explore the flexibility of credit card rewards by transferring points to airline programs for potential savings on international flights.

A Personalized Travel Success Story

In conclusion, my journey to Japan and Taiwan in Spring 2024 exemplifies the power of personalized planning and financial mindfulness in travel. From booking a one-way flight to Tokyo from Los Angeles for $630 to experiencing business class luxury from Osaka to Taipei, and finally, the homeward-bound flights using points, I managed to save over $1500.
